Digital nomadism reinvents the concept of work and life on the move
After years of waiting, Italy has finally approved a DN VISA.
DN: Definition and Legalities
Digital nomadism in Italy is regulated by the Decree n. 25 – February 28th, 2024 -also known as Decreto Sostegni-ter.
The Decree qualifies as a digital nomad a citizen of countries outside the European Union who performs highly specialized work through the use of technologies that allow him/her to work remotely, either as a freelancer or as a collaborator or employee of a company, who may also be a non-resident on Italian territory.
VISA REQUIREMENTS
– Minimum income: 28,000 euros per year (this amount might be subject to interpretation and varying from Consulate to Consulate)
– Health insurance: covering the entire duration of the stay
– Proof of housing solution: Rental agreement, property purchase, property use, etc
– Proof of work experience in that mode or as a remote worker for minimum 6 months
VISA APPLICATION
For this immigration program, it is necessary to apply to the competent diplomatic-consular office abroad, submitting a statement along with a copy of the personal ID.
PERMIT OF STAY
The worker must apply for a residence permit at the police headquarters in the province where he or she is located within 8 days of arrival in Italy and will carry the designation “digital nomad – remote worker.”
Permit of Stay validity is limited to 1 year, but annual renewal is allowed.
Family members of the digital nomad have the right to join obtaining a residence permit for “family reunification”.
For workers, bilateral social security agreements will be applied, if they exist between Italy and their country of origin; in case of absence of such agreements, Italian rules on social security and insurance coverage will apply for the entire period of validity of the residence permit.
As far as self-employed persons are concerned, digital nomads will be able to apply for a VAT number after the visa has been issued.
